Epidural pneumatosis: a benign entity in trauma patients.

چکیده
Air may be visualized in the spinal epidural space in a variety of settings. Pathologic collections of air from herniated vacuum disk and epidural abscess have been described [1, 2]. Iatrogenic air may result from epidural anesthesia or unsuccessful lumbar puncture. Intraspinal air (pneumorrhachis) after trauma has been considered a rare occurrence; only three cases have been reported in the literature. In one case, air was found in the thoracic spine after a fracture dislocation of L2 with jejunal perforation [3); in the second case, air was seen in the cervical spine in association with a pneumothorax [4]. In the third case, subarachnoid air extended from a traumatic pneumocephalus [5]. In other instances, pneumorrhachis would suggest an open or penetrating spinal injury. Epidural air directly resulting from a pneumomediastinum has not been reported before. Three cases are described here.

Epidurual pneumatosis: a benign complication of benign pneumomediastinum.
Subcutaneous emphysema and pneumomediastinum are well-known complications of barotrauma. There are no fascial barriers between the posterior mediastinum and the retropharyngeal and epidural spaces; thus, air can diffuse freely to the epidural space and produce an epidural pneumatosis. We report a case of epidural pneumatosis caused by a pneumomediastinum following nasotracheal intubation for an...

We present the case of a nine-year-old boy with hypoplastic left heart syndrome and immune thrombocytopenic purpura who subsequently developed pneumatosis intestinails with a benign clinical examination. While benign pneumatosis intestinails is a well-known clinical entity, the alarming radiographic findings set off a cascade of clinical angst among many providers. This case reminds physicians ...
متن کاملEpidural pneumatosis associated with spontaneous pneumomediastinum.
We read with much interest the article by S.J. Willing ( 1) that appeared in AJNR in 1991. The author states that epidural pneumatosis is commonly seen in trauma patients and that since computed tomography (CT) scans are seldom performed in spontaneous pneumomediastinum, a similar case has not been reported in the literature. Yoshimura, et al demonstrated the occurrence of epidural pneumatosis ...
متن کاملTraumatic spinal epidural hematoma: an alarming and diagnostic challenge in the ED
Traumatic spinal epidural hematoma (TSEH) is a neurosurgical emergency which is considered as one of the rare causes of back pain. The onset of symptoms presentation can vary especially following a trauma. Here, we report a case where a young girl had a trivial fall and presented symptoms of back pain three days later. She developed abrupt onset of lower limb weakness during her stay in the eme...

Cystic pneumatosis intestinalis is a rare benign entity, characterized by intramural cysts located mainly in the intestinal wall. The etiology has not yet been elucidated, but generally it is associated with a systemic disease (1-4). Colonic pneumatosis represents about 30% of gastrointestinal cases (1). We present the case of a young girl with anorexia who underwent surgical treatment for cyst...
